Sopheak Hem Australian Society for Microbiology Annual Scientific Meeting 2021

Sopheak Hem

I am doing a PhD at Faculty of Science, University of Technology Sydney, researching on genomic analysis of carbapenem-resistant environmental gram-negative bacteria. My study seeks to conduct an extensive whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis of 800 carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacterial isolates from a variety of environmental water sources in South Australia. This work is a collaboration between ausgem, University of South Australia and the Quadram Institute in the UK. The project will not only be the first truly natural environment study on carbapenem-resistance Gram–negative bacteria in Australia, but will also entail comparative genomics of antimicrobial resistance data between our isolates and global clinical, animal and environmental isolates. In Cambodia, I am a Clinical Microbiologist, Doctorate degree in Pharmacy specialized in Medical Biology from University of Health & Sciences, Cambodia and University of Paris Descartes, France. I had 10+ years of experience leading a clinical microbiology laboratory at Pasteur Institute in Cambodia that conducted research on respiratory diseases, meningitis, urine tract infection, antimicrobial resistance and more. I also lectured on general and clinical microbiology for pharmacy, dentistry and laboratory science at the University of Health Sciences in Cambodia.
