Over the past decade genomics has revealed the unexpectedly broad capacity of Staphylococcus aureus to rapidly adapt to the pressures of antibiotic exposure and host immunity. We have been exploring the consequences for the bacterium of mutations that arise during failed antibiotic treatment of S. aureus. Using innovative new techniques to map protein-DNA interactions, we reveal the regulatory networks and mechanisms central to the bacterium’s ability to evade or best treatments.
