Karin Thursky
Prof. Karin Thursky (MBBS, BSc, FRACP, MD, FAAHMS) is an infectious diseases physician and clinician health services researcher who has been the Chief Investigator and director of the One Health National Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) since 2015. Her pioneering research in AMS since 2000 has influenced both practice and policy and she is an international leader in the field. The research from NCAS has been translated into AMS practice and policy across hospital, aged care, and animal health. She is the director of the Guidance Group at Royal Melbourne Hospital which has led innovation in the development of computerised decision support systems to support antimicrobial prescribing, and the National Antimicrobial Prescribing Survey platform that is endorsed by the Commonwealth Department of Health with funding to support the National AMR strategy. She is a member of the AMS working party for Australian Commission on Quality and Safety in Healthcare, and an expert advisor in the Commonwealth technical advisory group responsible for delivering the National AMR Strategy. Karin has a strong track record in health services research and implementation science and is the inaugural Associate Director of health services research and implementation science at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. She has successfully implemented and scaled clinical pathways for the prevention and management of infections in both adult and paediatric settings. Her broad research expertise includes clinical epidemiology, machine learning, mixed methods research, implementation science and health economics.
